A warm “Welcome back” to our seasonal clients! The winter here in southern Pennsylvania seems to have been exceptionally long and it’s good to see flowers blooming, sunshine and warmer weather. It’s also great to see the landscaping and paving trucks on the roads in Chambersburg and Shippensburg.
Things to keep in mind as you are welcoming back your employees or hiring new ones:
- Do you have updated employee forms? These would include W4, I-9, Certificate of Residency and direct deposit forms if necessary. These can be found under the ‘Forms’ tab on our website, or you can stop by our office and pick them up.
- Per the PA Department of Labor and Industry, an employer needs to submit new hire reporting for any new employee or re-hire that hasn’t been paid or worked for the employer for 60 consecutive days. If you’re unsure about how to submit new hire reporting, please let us know. We’d be happy to help any way we can.
- Are there any new deductions? If so, please let us know before submitting payroll so that everything can be paid in a timely manner.
- Are your mandatory Labor Law posters up-to-date? If not, let us know. We have some terrific new services that can help keep you compliant.
Thinking about paying your workers on a 1099 instead of through payroll? There are very strict rules in place by the IRS regarding classification of workers. There are three categories that help determine whether the person you hired is an employee or an independent contractor: behavioral control, financial control, and relationship of parties; please visit www.irs.gov for more information.
If you’re not sure, you as the employer, or your potential employee, can have the IRS make the determination by completing IRS Form SS-8, Determination of Worker Status for Purposes of Federal Employment Taxes and Income Tax Withholding.
Have you changed your company set up or entity type, deductions, or bank information? Moved to a different location? Please let us know as soon as possible, so your records are kept up to date.
Here’s to another great season!
